Military Academies

There are five military academies in the United States which are West Point, Annapolis, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy amd Merchant Marine Academy.. West Point prepares students for service in the US Army and information can be found at www.usma.edu . Annapolis prepares students for service in the Navy and information can be found at www.usna.edu. The Air Force Academy prepares students for service in the Air Force and information can be found at www.usafa.af.mil. The US Coast Guard Academy prepares students to become members of the Coast Guard and information can be found at www.cga.edu . The US Merchant Marine Academy also trains officers to command ships that help deliver supplies to our troups during national emergencies, and help guarantee US access to foreign ports. Information can be found at www.usmma.edu .

Military academies were only open to men until July 1956, when Congress passed Public Law 845, authorizing women officers in the National Guard. Captain Norma Parsons was the first female member. In 1991 women were given direct combat rolls, such as fighter and helicopter pilots. Today about 35,000 women serve in the National Guard, making up 10% of the members. Our other military academies were only open to men until 1975. At that time, President Gerald Ford signed Public Law 94-106 which opened West Point, Annapolis and the Air Force Academy to women.

Another way to train for military service is the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). In this program young men and women can train to become officers in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. ROTC is offered at over 1,000 colleges and universities. Students who join this program go to school full-time but they also take courses in military science that give them the training to become officers. Scholarships are also available through the ROTC. Information on the ROTC program can be found at www.todaysmilitary.com .
